Me and Qiu's Partnership!

Its been almost 6 months of sales and we've been moving from century square, kovan and finally we're now at suntec city in front of carrefour. Business has been really good and it definitely beats seeing patients (you can see i'm not a great fan of dentistry but that's another story).

Glad to get the chance to work hand in hand with my future wife (haha qiu's gonna kill me... she wants a sibeh romatic proposal with the works). The fact that our 5 1/2 year relationship actually grew stronger after staying and working together for the past 6 months must count for something i guess. Now just need to finish my pesky belated final exams and get rid of the bond... leaving the wide expanse of the future lying at my feet to do as i please. : )

The Ballad of Zhou and Qiu.

Its been 2 months since our business me and dear Qiu set up took off with a bang at East Point. We've been moving around since then (Tiong Baruh plaza in the last 2 weeks of April and then White Sands for the whole of May). Its now the last day of our operations in White Sands and we will be moving over to Century Square later where we will be stationed at a strategically located pushcart facing the atrium for 2 weeks. Then its a 2 week break (hoping to go back to Cameron highlands and will also be flying off to visit my suppliers overseas). After that will be at Suntect in for the whole of July and maybe back at century square in Aug before we're taking a break to allow me to concentrate on my finals in Oct. Then Nov and Dec will be a free for all somewhere : )

Having a start up looks deceptively easy but its really mentally and physically challenging. The learning curve was steep and there isn't much time to mull over mistakes made. We just pick ourselves up and learn as we went along. Hours were long and we learnt how to multi task with the job of logistics, accounting, transport, sales and marketing being shared between the 2 of us. But what's amazing is that me and Qiu make a damn good team. I was honestly worried that the stress of running a push cart could strain our relationship but instead the opposite happened! We actually got much closer while running the business together (some customers go "So sweeeet!" when i tell them that we're a couple! hahaha). I sure am glad to have her by my side and i think she feels the same way too.

So yeah we work almost non-stop unless we close a little earlier to catch a late nite movie or on sunday mornings when Qiu's parents take over for 3 hrs while Qiu joins me on one of my hare-brained early morning 15 - 20 km bike expeditions...

For those wondering, sales have been damn good (it better be good or else why do you think i want to do this?) haha... lets put it this way, i kinda dread having to serve my 4 year bond and get paid peanuts to do mind-numbing dental work in such a stifling environment! I mean after the freedom to earn my own keep, i'm not exactly thrilled to have to work for someone again. Well the plan is to earn enough from my sideline to buy myself out after 2 years of bond... then hopefully be able to buy a conservation shop house, restore it to its former beauty and then open a home deco shop and country style cafe on the ground floor and a dental clinic on the 2nd floor while doing a masters in Public Health as a part time degree programme at NUS.

Life's good : )

The Bangla working

While the boss is resting : p

Thank god for my Dell mini 9 and Singtel 3.5G! Though i use it more for facebook and hardwarezone. Qiu said EDMW is ok for shopping centres as long as its SFW hahaha...

Wanna buy?

6 Months

Apparently due to a couple of screw-ups (no fault of my own), and my slight unwillingness to start serving my bond in July, i am left with the strange position of having 6 months to finish my extraction competency and re-do one bridge which i think if i rush things a bit can be done in 2 weeks. That kinda of mesh just nicely with my plans to :
  1. Set up a Pushcart/Bazaar business in the East, North-East and Central areas with my dear Qiu. Essentially i will be taking over my family business which deals with teaching art classes in primary school and selling of country-style home decorations. We were at Hougang mall in March, Tiong Baruh plaza in the first 2 weeks of April and East Point in the middle of April. We are booked to be at Whitesands for the whole of May (the pushcart on the 1st floor outside OCBC) and Century Sq for the first 2 weeks of June. Busy eh? : )
  2. Learn Bahasa Melayu (Better patient communication esp with the older generation)
  3. Learn Driving (Passed my Final Theory yest!). Will be getting a Van once i pass my driving test in July.
  4. On the dental front i intend to use the 6mths to do verneers, practice more cast-post cores, do perio surgery and observe more implant procedures. I think doing more wisdom tooth ops would also provide me with much needed experience too.
  5. Go on holidays (plan to go China, Taiwan and Cameron Highlands)

My House in Bishan which i called home for 20 yrs (My parents still stay there... i've moved with my dear Qiu to tampines) Its essentially my family's business HQ, showroom and warehouse all in one.

My front Garden : )

Changes...

Its the last day of the year (point of view) and i'm looking at a really long weekend due to some really lucky lunar calender maneuvering (those dudes who calculated the CNY should be given a Nobel peace price).

Am looking at graduation in June 2009 and will start serving out my bond with the government in July... Can't wait to start earning my own way in this world. $3 K a month to look into ppl's mouth 5 days a week, 9 to 5 is quite good monies actually! Thinking of blowing part of my first pay check on a Zheng until gao gao computer and a 26 inch LCD screen with a Wii or X box. The Dr in front of my name is a nice bonus although i would not really want people to start addressing me with that title.... kinda of embarassing in a way.... my whole life being a nobody and then suddenly with that 2 letters on front of my name i become a somebody... i think being a nobody a better.... : )

Ok on the personal front, me and my dear Qiu adopted a kitten whom we named stellar (due to a white star on its chest)... pic below! Its adorable but can get pretty funky and crazy, biting anything it can see! Also, dear Qiu is thinking of quitting her sucky engineering job and starting a small push cart business selling country home decorations and gifts (pics of our pilot project below too). She will be testing the market in east point and white sands before jumping in with the ilumina which is launching in april in Bugis! I've got no problems with that especially since i will have a guaranteed source of income starting in june and my mom is providing the goods.

Oh... an announcement to make.... me and Qiu have starting staying together so i guess wedding bells will be ringing soon (actually not so soon lah.... maybe in a few months time)! Haha... Just felt it was the right time to do so plus my landlord was gonna raise the rent by a ridiculous amount so had no choice but to move out.

Ok then am off to enjoy the CNY weekend!

Some kids playing on this tree at the Botanical Gardens which is featured on our $5 note! Qiu and I decided to go botanical gardens one day for some R&R and the time spent there proved to be damn worth it!

Swans!

Qiu standing behind this waterfall.

Nice big open space for people to picnic on.

Open air stage.

Had our dinner at our Fave french makan hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurant at serene centre. Its good and cheap and the chef is some french dude.

Dear Qiu can't wait for her Makan to arrive!

Pic of Stellar sleeping on the first day it arrived... It was so small that it could fit inside a little basket!

Dear Qiu bonding with Stellar.

Went with my classmate to the Marina Barrage. Apart from the exhibition, it was quite boring actually!

The interactive exhibition.

Scale model of the Barrage.

It actually works!

Nice big open grass patch on the Barrage.

The actual Marina Barrage.

Went with dear Qiu to the AFA (Anime Festival Asia) 2008 for some look see. Saw bolster covers printed with bikini babes/pedo type for the CMI nerds to get up close and comfy with.

Seemed to be a lack of chio cosplayers there.... not very happening.

Naruto!

Quite crowded.

Some more cosplayers

Why was everyone trying to take pics of this glass cabinet?

Ah that's why!

Had to wait until the misses was distracted b4 doing what i do best behind her back! hahaha

Cool!

X-wing! *Drool* Damn where can i get this!

Ah now we're talking!

Model of Gundam.

Dear Qiu posing with her fave cartoon character! "Bolt's no.1 Fan"!

Me and Dear Qiu were selling country deco and gifts at Hougang Mall during the Dec holidays.

Qiu posing in front of her stall.

Dear Qiu serving customers. Sales was brisk especially just b4 Christmas.

Went with Gilbert for some look see at the new National Geographic store at Vivo. Quite interesting but felt that it was damn expensive. $399 for a jacket?! WTH lah.

Great Pictures from the Nat Geo collection.

Went to listen to Simon's Choir (he's the conductor in front) sing at Orchard.

This reggae band was beating all the other christmas performaces hands down!

Stellar merrily sleeping on our bed!

KNN! Who woke me up?!

Me with my new pair of sunglasses (SAF issued)!

On the spur of the moment, went up to the 40th storey of the new Toa Payoh flats with Gilbert and this is the power view that you can get there! Better and safer than the flyer and the best thing is that its absolutely FREE!

Pics I've Been Meaning To Post Up But Didn't Have The Time To.

As usual my blog comes back from the dead during one of my holidays which really doesn't feel much like a holiday at all. Its interesting how as the years pass, a lot of the dental blogs seem to be updated less and less frequently and some have disappeared under the weight of stress or disappoint. Of course the blogs of the juniors are still going strong with all their idealism and bright eyed optimism.

That reminds me.... in 7 mths time, i'll be able to add Doc in front of my name and whether that is a boon or bane on society remains to be seen though i am inclined to believe in the latter. This term has been going well and i think i've got a fighting chance of graduating on time. Ok then have a look at the pics i took last holidays and will post up some pics that i took during term time in my next post. Cheers.

My "muddy shore" proof attire. Pic taken before i went off with dear Qiu to have a look around some lesser known parts of changi coast.

Changi Coast walkway.

Dear Qiu watching the waves come roaring in.

Napping Cat.

Squirrel

Up the road to nowhere.

It leads some where after all.

Ah! Found the old Royal Engineers HQ from the days of the British Empire.

Doing a bit of exploring. Qiu always complained that if i see a old building i just have to go in a have a look see.

Here's how the back looks like.

The last time i saw this kind of stairs was through a gas mask while training at some of the old British barracks at Nee Soon.

With Dear Qiu at East Coast.

Taken at Bedok Jetty.

Finally managed to plan a trip to Pengarang and Sungie Rengit for some seafood and ostrict farm viewing. Went with SY, YK and Qiu. Here's YK and SY looking at tekong from the back of the bumboat.

Qiu didn't dare to go outside so she stayed in the bumboat haha.

Blue skies; Green Sea.

On a hair raising journey to Sungie Rengit. The taxi was going at 120 km/hr even while overtaking or at bends.

Sungie Rengit town centre. Would recommend the grass jelly to anyone who visits.

3 Musketeers.

Kwa si mi?

They even have Ostrich Porn...... for a price!

This monkey was damn fierce and mischievous. The keeper there told us that it snatched spectacles from some unsuspecting tourists when they got too close.

This provision shop at Sungie Rengit is damn famous for its Lao Po Ping and other assorted pastries. They still make the Lao Po Ping by hand so its very fresh and tasty.

They even have a big version of Lao Po Ping!

Jade Garden at Sungie Rengit which was featured on many food shows in Singapore as can be seen in the banner. Saw this Singaporean family drive up in a Merc just to have lunch there.

Sungie Rengit is famous for their baby lobsters which can be seen in the tanks there.

Power Packed lunch! Too bad was so engrossed in eating that didn't manage to take a "before makan" pic. So can only present this "after makan" pic. haha

Singapore Biennale 2008 and Singapore Flyer!

Spent one of the weekends during the holiday (Saturday) going to the Biennale and the flyer. The biennale was quite interesting and some of the exhibits were pretty thought provoking, however, some others were just pure pretentious Bull shit. Haha. Anway went to the Singapore Flyer after that because had discounted tickets and though the view was nice, personally felt that i could get the same view for free from the 40th floor of the new toa payoh HDB flats. Anyway enjoy the pictures below and other holiday pics coming right up : )

First Stop for the Biennale was at the Southern Beach Developments. Paid $5 (Student Price) for entry into all the 3 venues of the Biennale (City Hall, South Beach and Raffles Place)

Its Shady but quite hot so light clothing is a must and if possible go in the evening. Loved the neo-classical styles of the old British Barracks built in the 1930's. Remined me of Nee Soon 21th div HQ and the old Changi Commando HQ.

Where the hall used to be. Don't really know what the orange lines are supposed to mean.... Just can't appreciate contemporary art haha.

Dear Qiu appreciates art better than i do haha.

100 years of solitude.

Stickers. Supposed to mean something i guess.

This dude chewed up chewing gum and took photos of them. WTH!?

Some artists built this pagoda out of sugar and they are waiting for maggots, ants etc to break it down.... bloody stinks. Its symbolises Burma being eaten from within by corruption and tyranny.

A helicopter that a couple of people actually built with their bare hands in Vietnam... They had a video showing how they did it and the links the helicopter had with the Vietnam war. By the way the helicopter actually works!

Beautiful facade. This used to be the HQ of the Singapore Volunteer Force the precursor of the current 1st PDF.

Beautiful quote. "They fought not in enmity against men but against powers of darkness enslaving souls of men."

City Hall

I'm on the red carpet at last!

Maggots!

This artist pasted a Google map of Singapore onto the floor of the former supreme court. He was giving out stickers and inviting people to tag their homes, fave places etc.

My contribution for the sake of art! Haha.

Dunno what dear Qiu was doing.

This dude actually knitted out a scooter and a bird!

Beautiful!

The images actually appear to move when you walk past them.

Witty!

If you top up another $20 to your biennale ticket, you get to sit on the Singapore flyer!

In the capsule.

Me and Dear Qiu!

Nice View! At the apex of the flyer could see all the way to the mountains in Johor.

City Skyline.

Minor Operation

As i said in my last post had a minor op to remove this troublesome sebaceous cyst that was on my back. Below are the pics i promised haha. Didn't include the pic of the excised cyst (looked like pork) due to the fact that it might cause loss of appetite haha.

Waiting for Doc to start.

Wah very Pro sia. Haha. Had the operation done at the NUS Health and Wellness centre for free.

The stitches after 72 hrs. Had 6 on the outside and 3 on the inside. The doc said that the cyst went quite deep in (about 2 cm plus deep) so had to place stitches inside to close the defect.

To put it in perspective. Will have a nice scar there next time haha....
